Commonly Asked Questions

Red and near infrared (NIR) light therapy, referred to as “Red Light Therapy”, is a type of therapy that uses specific wavelengths of light to bring about positive health benefits. This form of phototherapy uses wavelengths of light that are considered bioactive in humans. People use red light therapy to improve skin quality, speed wound healing, stimulate hair growth, reduce chronic pain, improve workout recovery times, and much more. Studies indicate that red light therapy’s effects occur due to the stimulative effect that red and NIR wavelengths of light have on mitochondria, the energy center of the cells. Red and near-infrared light are part of the electromagnetic spectrum and, more specifically, part of the spectrum of light emitted by the sun. These wavelengths of light are “bioactive” in humans and can be a catalyst for profound health benefits in humans.

We recommend removing most or all of your clothes to allow your skin to soak up the maximum amount of light during their session.

Similar to exercise, the more you do it, the better the results. Recommended use depends on your overall health goals and your situation, but overall, 3-6 times per week for a maximum of 10 minutes is ideal.

For first time users, we recommend starting out at 2-3 minutes, or 4-5 minutes based on your overall health, and slowly working up to 10-minute sessions over the course of 2-4 weeks as your body acclimates to the therapy.

It depends on your goals. If you do the Red Light session first, it activates your mitochondria, which activates all of your cells, prompting your body to sweat more during your Sauna session. If you do the Sauna session first, the Red Light afterwards will help your recovery, similar to recovery for exercise.

We do not recommend this, as Red Light Therapy is a very powerful health tool, and it is best to start slowly and work yourself up to the maximum of 10-minutes. More does not mean better! You can reach maximum benefits in less amount of time at Salt n’ Sauna than most products on the market.

Red Light Therapy is a non-invasive, relaxing experience that lasts a maximum of 10 minutes. During your Red Light Therapy session, you’ll be in a private room with full-body (front and back) red light panels that you will stand in between. Our trained staff will explain the session do’s and don’ts and will go over any questions you might have. We turn the Red Light panels on and leave to give you privacy, where you can remove as much clothing as you are comfortable with to allow your skin to soak up the maximum amount of light during the session. We do provide a bench to sit down during the session if you have mobility issues that make it difficult to stand for a maximum of 10 minutes. During the session, you’ll feel a mild warmth due to the amount of energy emitting from the lights. We recommend that clients do not look directly at the lights during the session, and to keep your eyes closed. If your eyes are sensitive to light, you can choose to wear your own sunglasses or use Red Light Therapy eyewear we provide. Each session is tailored to your individual, specific needs, and we encourage all clients to relax, soak up the warm glow, and reap the health benefits!

While there is a growing body of scientific research suggesting that modest amounts of red and NIR LED light may benefit certain eye conditions, our lights are very bright! When using, DO NOT stare directly into the light. We recommend keeping your eyes closed during the entirety of your session, or you can wear your own sunglasses, or eye protection that we provide.

You may or may not get a slight dewy sweat due to the energy that the lights are emitting (they are not hot), and/or due to the increased cell activation within your body.

Red light is absorbed by the skin, boosting collagen production aiding skin conditions, and you can see the red light, while Near Infrared penetrates deeper aiding muscle recovery, cellular renewal, joint pain, and is invisible to the eye.

Yes, our panels are Class II FDA certified.

Red light therapy works by stimulating tiny organs within your cells called mitochondria. These important parts of your cells produce the energy that cells use throughout the body. Specifically, red and infrared light is absorbed by a chemical in the mitochondria called cytochrome C oxidase. This molecule is part of the chemical reaction that produces another important molecule called adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP is how cells store, transfer, and use energy. Increased energy production allows cells to replicate faster, allowing for more rapid healing or recovery. It also helps to improve their function, allowing them to potentially live longer and do more. Red light therapy is also thought to help suppress inflammation, helping to further enhance healing and reduce the pain inflammation can bring.

Yes. Red light therapy is widely considered one of the safest forms of phototherapy. This is because red light and near-infrared light are low- energy forms of electromagnetic radiation that do not hurt or burn the skin. Red Light Therapy does not expose skin to damaging UV rays.

There are many potential reasons that people use red light therapy. As this form of phototherapy continues to be researched, new potential benefits of RLT are still being discovered. Some of the most widely known benefits people use red light therapy include...Stimulating wound healing and tissue repair, reducing aging effects by supporting collagen production, reducing pain by decreasing swelling and inflammation, improving joint health, improving physical performance through improved muscle recovery and energy levels, and improving sleep quality and duration. The extensive amount of potential benefits that red light therapy offers makes regular use of this form of phototherapy a mainstay of many people’s daily health routines.

Six, carefully selected peak LED wavelengths - 590nm, 630nm, 660nm, 810nm, 830nm and 850nm, which allow for the panel to be 100% Red (590,630,660), 100% NIR (810.830,850), or 50% Red and 50% NIR. We recommend using both the Red Light and NIR wavelengths, to gain the maximum benefit with each session, giving you an optimal blend of light throughout the optical window while targeting the key peak spectrum.

The use of the 590nm wavelength in the panels was driven by emerging scientific research that highlights its unique benefits. This wavelength contains higher energy than other wavelengths of red light and borders orange and red light. Because of its higher energy, this wavelength of light does not penetrate as deeply into body tissues, making it most helpful for superficial tissues, especially the skin.

A study in Photobiomodulation, Photomedicine, and Laser Surgery using 590nm wavelength light found that this wavelength can help to delay the attrition of telomeres, a component of DNA related to aging. This protective effect could offer anti-aging benefits for the tissues this wavelength is used on.

The 590nm wavelength is most targeted towards dermatology applications, and we have it here at Salt n’ Sauna Wellness. There are several studies examining the effects this wavelength has on the skin, and it has shown promising results in various studies. Research published in Skin Research & Technology indicates that this wavelength can aid in improving the structure and organization of skin cells, improve skin tone, texture, and overall health. Its ability to stimulate collagen production makes it a powerful tool for anti-aging treatments, reducing wrinkles and fine lines.

A study in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found that the use of the 590nm wavelength contributes to reducing redness of the skin and promoting healing after sunburns. Other studies in Medical Science and Dermatologic Surgery showed that this wavelength improved wound healing and reduced redness of the skin. Research published in Cells showed that the 590nm wavelength could help even out skin pigmentation through its effects on specific skin cells.

One of the most exciting aspects of the 590nm wavelength is its role in enhancing nitric oxide release in cells. Nitric oxide is a crucial molecule in the human body, playing a vital role in various physiological processes, including blood circulation and immune response.

The stimulation of NO synthesis by the 590nm wavelength has far- reaching implications for health and wellness. By improving blood circulation, it can aid in delivering more oxygen and nutrients to cells, enhancing overall vitality and energy levels. This boost in circulation also contributes to better muscle recovery and reduced fatigue.

The ability to stimulate blood circulation through the release of nitric oxide also can contribute to overall energy levels and circulation and has even shown promising results in helping with erectile dysfunction.

The incorporation of the 590nm wavelength reflects a deep understanding of light therapy's potential to enhance holistic health. By harnessing the unique benefits of this wavelength, our panels offer a more comprehensive and differentiated approach to red light therapy.

Yes, they are safe with no EMF wave exposure with our Red Light protocol of standing at least 12” from the light panel. If you are 6” away from the panel you will also experience no EMF waves. If you are within 0-3” there is a moderate output of EMF waves similar to a computer and less than a cell phone.

The effects of Red Light therapy were initially discovered by NASA scientists during research into plant growth using red and infrared light. One accidental finding was that researchers who spent hours exposed to the light sources experienced noticeably faster healing of cuts and abrasions. Since its initial discovery, there has been extensive research into how red light therapy works. Researchers believe these specific wavelengths of light influence cellular function by the impact on mitochondria, the microscopic powerhouses of each cell. Red light therapy is thought to enhance mitochondrial function by stimulating cytochrome C oxidase, a key enzyme in mitochondria that is sensitive to these wavelengths of light.

There are no industry-wide contraindications for red light therapy use, but we always recommend speaking with your healthcare provider if you have specific health issues, questions or concerns. Typically, any negative side effects (which are rare) are due to misuse of at-home products or being exposed for too long of a session which can cause the opposite effect intended, or detox symptoms. If you have any of the following, please check with your healthcare provider before use...recent burns that contain residual thermal energy, malignant cancers, hyperthyroidism, pregnancy, eye disease, fever or infection, severe bleeding or blood loss, use of photosensitizing medications, or have light sensitivity.
